BAKE 10 – MAY 10, 2020
Yeast Utilized: 1 teaspoon
Molasses! I have it! So I wanted to bake my aunt Julia’s Oatmeal Bread recipe again. I really enjoy making this bread, too. And guess what? Molasses smells horrible! Oh, my god. So stinky!

Not pictured: The stinky
I wasn’t sure how this would taste because, boy howdy, that was a smell. But look how pretty!

Cute ball of dough ready to rise.
Now, you may recall, this is the recipe that called for a cross in it “so it rises.” On my first attempt with this bread, I put a Star Trek insignia instead. This time, out of love for “Black Sails,” I tried to put a pirate ship.

Eh, kinda…?
I should start personalizing more loaves. It amuses me.
This time, I utterly trusted the baking time suggested by my foremothers. One hour in the oven and ta-dah!

Ahoy! Thatsa hearty loaf!
And to my surprise, the molasses smell didn’t linger at all. It just makes for a beautiful color and flavor.

Tasty molasses loaf
I shall try more recipes that use molasses (though it’s not my favorite smell) because A) I have it, and B) it’s an intriguing ingredient. I am intrigued…
Also, did you know that Boston once flooded with molasses? Ugh.
