BAKE 24 – JUNE 26, 2020
Yeast Utilized: 2 1/4 teaspoons
I had only one recipe left in my stash that I’ve not tried yet, so today, I put on Doctor Who and made soft pretzels.

Yeast yeasting.
This was an interesting one because there’s no downtime, no rest or rise. Just right on through. While I made the dough and did a bit of kneading, I got the water boiling for the optional baking-soda bath.

(What’s actually in focus in this picture? Nothing. How is that even possible?)

Boiling in the BG.
While the oven heated and the water got to boiling, I made my pretzel shapes. The rolling didn’t go significantly better than my first attempt with challah, but it was fortunately in smaller amounts. That made it easier.

Pretzel-esque
I used my potato masher to lower the pretzels into the boiling water. No pictures because they only boiled for 30 seconds each before being removed and slid into the beaten egg (and wasn’t that a sloppy mess—I definitely ended up with a full baked egg on my baking sheet).
This was also the first time using my broiler. I installed the oven when I moved in and hadn’t used that function until now. Pretzels seem a good cause. And they turned out all right!

A bit ugly and a big egg-y, but very good.
